ABOUT ME

Welcome to Furman on Film! I really appreciate you stopping by to check out the many lists, articles, videos, and reviews we have to offer here. For as long as I can remember, I’ve loved the art of film. As a kid this was pictures like the original Star Wars trilogy, Back to the Future, Ghostbusters, and many others products of the blockbuster-driven, sequel-happy, coked-out 80’s. This gave way to a growing love for romantic comedies on one end of the spectrum in the 90’s, and independent cinema and horror on the other. The Aughts brought indie film to the fore, international pictures to my eyes for the first time, and a nascent understanding of auteurist cinema. In the decade plus since, I’ve spent a great deal of time with the AFI Top 100, Sight and Sound decade lists, and even a USC Film School “must watch” prereq list. I have no formal training in the art. I just adore the form, and have been soaking up content via pods and websites for well over 15 years. Fortunately, for those of us who dub ourselves “cinephiles,” this kind of “schooling” is ample enough.

I’m also thankful this all collided with my other great passion - writing. This is why this blog exists. For those who love to read about high art or cult classics. Those who love the grittiest genres and the most pristine, the sacred and the profane. I feel so many sites take sides on this populist vs. artistic divide. Not here at FOF. You’ll find Westerns, dramas, comedies, international features, romance, and indie darlings all frolicking together. Ingmar Bergman in a deep embrace with David Lynch. We also hope you’ll visit our “Deep Dive section,” where I examine individual films in depth, really taking a look “under the hood.”  If you’d like to request that I view and write up a review for a film that is a great treasure of yours, we welcome that as well! In the future, we even hope to share guest reviews.

If you like what you find, please do us the great favor of signing up for our mailing list, or checking out Furman on Film on Youtube (short video reviews coming weekly). Thanks for reading!
