Causeway - 2022
I wish they made more films like Causeway. That is to say. simple, human, and deeply moving. A quiet and understated drama that traffics heavily in pain and familial trauma, but never ceases to highlight the power of shared connection from the most unlikely of places.
It’s so good to see Lawrence get back to her indie roots, and Henry is just about as good as any we have going. Together, they find a way to heat up the screen. It’s not sexual, but it is ablaze. The film comes alive in their short vignettes of conversation.
A criticism I keep encountering is that the film is TOO slight. Why not a bigger catharsis, the naysayers seem to say. But, I kinda liked where this one sat with me. Better a truly felt glint of returning hope than showy speechifying which rings false.
By doing less, Causeway does more.
